Totally Runner: How Sara Learned to Love Running

Meet Sara. Everyone say…”Hi Sara!”

Sara has lost over 100lbs. She has become a group fitness instructor and enjoys running when she can.

When she first started running she was able to go 3 miles in 65-70 minutes. Now 3 miles takes her around 33-36 minutes. She says running is an inspiring form of exercise for her and it has taught her that she can go the distance.

Here’s Sara…

Well, my whole journey is pretty simple. I was never the athletic kid, I was never the obese kid, I was never the little kid either. I was always the overweight kid or “nice personality” “stay sweet” kid. I didn’t like to sweat, because of being overweight as a young adult and feared being made fun of. As I got older, the weight continued to creep up. At 19 I was diagnosed with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. I was about 20 years old, when I went to a new doctor he told me that I had to do something about my weight.

I didn’t know where to begin.

I walked a little (very little). I struggled, A LOT. I stayed away from running because I thought runners were born that way and I didn’t believe I could do it.

In 2005 I got a little more serious with working out. But it wasn’t until 2006 that I finally tried to run. It took me 64 minutes to do 3 miles. Not a great time. I still didn’t “enjoy it”, it was just something to do. I joined another gym and started reading tid bits here and there. I learned about intervals, and thought oh, I can do that…30 seconds on and 60 seconds off sounded great!

Still, no love for running, but I continued…

I ended up joining a gym and won a little contest for a one week personal training package. The trainer made me run every time. I asked him to stop making me run. I told him that the only time I ran was in bootcamp and that I didn’t like running.

He told me that if I changed my thought process I would like to run and would do it more often and get stronger and faster.

So, to prove him wrong, I would get on the treadmill and run. I would say to myself…self…”I like running, I like running” both out loud and in my head.

Guess what? After about 2 months of this…

I learned to love running.

It was during this time that I finally learned what it meant to have a runners high. I learned what it meant to go the distance. I learned how mentally strong I was and have become. I went from not believing that I wasn’t a runner, because I wasn’t “born that way” to making myself that way. Finding strength and determination in running has brought me where I am today, along with all the other things I do, it has contributed to my weight loss of 100 lbs and keeps me mentally fit as well.

I didn’t ever believe I could run a 5k, let alone a 10k, 15k or half marathon, with my first half marathon time of 2:27! So, here I am, having completed all four of these things, and am training for my second half marathon now, for Thanksgiving Day….Yup, with Totally Running!

Running isn’t about being born that way, Running is about the run. Proving to yourself that you can.

You don’t have to have a 6 or 8 minute mile to make you a runner, you just have to lace up your Brooks and get going. Once you believe you can, you will. Running will become a part of you if you let it. It will show you, teach you, and most definitely, make you believe in you. Running in my opinion is one of the most mental exercises, because when you’re on the treadmill, or out on the road, you have you, your ear buds, and the pavement. It’s all yours and no one can ever take that from you.

When I don’t get to run, I feel like something is missing.

Once I’ve finished that run, through all the thoughts of doubt, or why I am running 9 miles today….it is the greatest feeling of accomplishment.

There’s a lot to experience before, during and after the run. My favorite part is always the doubt of the distance in the beginning, and the feeling of yeah, I just did that!
