Meet Kim Hall, Owner of Totally Running and Walking
I know firsthand the life-changing benefits an active lifestyle can provide. —Kim
In 2012 I ran my first, two marathons (Chicago and Savannah), I created and managed my first 5k (Kicks for Kids), I became a RRCA-certified running coach, and I became the owner of Totally Running and Walking, Inc.
With the opportunity to merge my interests, owning a running store and managing races, I have been able to deliver on my mission of engaging the running community and raising money for local charities. I want to provide for runners and walkers fun opportunities to get out and move their feet. I have directed 36 road races to date that have raised thousands of dollars for local charities. I have managed to keep the doors of the store open despite setbacks including a changing retail economy. Over the last five years, I have learned so much from my customers, racers, staff, and experts in the business. I have tried and failed and succeeded at many things. I owe it all to the amazing staff that believes my mission as much as me.
A little bit of my background... I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Colorado with a BS in Neuroscience in 2003. I studied hormones and behavior. I worked closely with diabetics and noticed that the ones who took time to exercise were happier, healthier, and in better control of their overall health. It is proven that hormones released during physical activity greatly impact overall health and wellness. But like most, I was busy and had become sedentary. I preached exercise and proper nutrition but I did not heed my own advice. It wasn’t until I struggled with post-partum depression after the birth of triplets that I began to practice what I preached.
I had always enjoyed running, but I never was consistent. I honestly didn’t know the distance of a 5k, 10k, etc! At first running seemed impossible, I was carrying a ton of weight from my pregnancy and I was terribly out of shape. It was hard at first but I kept at it while my trio was at church pre-school. I used a "couch to 5k" phone app. Today, I recommend using programs like this to customers--they slowly introduce you to running so you won’t get injured. It isn’t easy, but if you keep trying it gets easier. If you stick to it I promise you will be able to run. Don’t give up! I was not able to run to my mailbox and now I have run five marathons.
Meet the Team
My experience over the years has consisted of working in areas of retail clothing, food hospitality, chiropractic rehab, physical therapy, and now… fitting great running shoes. I been working with Totally Running and Walking since February 2017, and it’s been awesome! My future career goals consist of me getting my masters in Physician’s Assistant within the next few years in the area of sports medicine, orthopedics, or cardiology.
I am Caribbean American and was born in Margate, Florida, but a majority of my childhood was spent in Corona and Riverside California. I moved to Georgia when I was 12 years old and went to Lanier Middle School and North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee Georgia. While in high school, I participated in Track and Field, running the 100m, 200m, 4x1 relay, and the long jump. I was also able to flaunt my dance skills on the Step-Team. Once I graduated high school in 2006, I realized I absolutely love exercise, sports, and wellness and decided to get my bachelors in exercise science at Georgia State University. To family and friends, I am still considered a Cali-Peach and true Gwinnician trying to tap back into my inner adult by venturing back into leisure activities such as track & field sprinting, t.v./movie extras, hiking, bike riding, roller blading, and skate boarding.
Travis ColeI love working for Totally Running because it keeps me connected to the running community. Runners are a great bunch of people and great to be around. I love sharing my own experience with others and helping them. It is the ultimate satisfaction that I get from working at Totally Running. It was just a few weeks out from the race when I decided to run my first race on a whim; I have been hooked ever since. I've run every distance from a 5k to a 50k. My true love is the trail--more specifically the Mountain trails! I run because it takes me to my happy place and gives me a greater sense of freedom. I run because it strengthens discipline, determination, and drive which ultimately build self confidence. I run for peace of mind!
At Totally Running, I love talking with everyone from long-time locals to international travelers about where they've been, events they've done, what they're training for, and why they love running, walking, or anything else that does the trick. One of my go-to workouts is a HIIT session with sprint repeats at the track, but my favorite place to be is the mountain trail. I love to run for the physical catharsis, and I need it even more for the mental release.
I'm originally from Mishawaka, IN (Notre Dame die-hard country), but I did most of my growing up in LaGrange, GA. I graduated from William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA with a degree in Kinesiology and Psychology. Cross Country grabbed me in 10th grade (partly, to stay in peak shape for soccer) and I've been running ever since--over 20 years now. I've raced distances from 100m sprints and milk miles (ok, maybe a beer mile, haha), up to half marathons and several triathlons, including an Olympic distance triathlon. I feel blessed to have hiked on the Olympic Peninsula with family and to have backpacked the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail with friends. My future race plans include an obstacle course race, road marathon, trail ultra marathon, and an Ironman triathlon.
